geminianeyes: Who Needs Sanity (Who Needs Sanity)

So in recent days, people have been posting random bits of poetry here and there. It’s on a meme that I enjoy reading. Here’s the one I’ve done today. Will post the other that Karcy assigned me in a bit:

So Rincredulous sent me a link to a very interesting challenge. It was quite simply, 100 topics to write about when you hit a block. However, while chatting with her, she suggested I do both short story and themed blog post (the result of which you can read here) but that’s neither here nor there.

So if you’re wondering, here’s my chosen 100 topics, taken straight from the 100theme challenge on DA. I might add a short story to it, I might not. Or maybe a blog post. We shall see.

Vocab test

So apparently I may know about 35, 500 words in the English language. Huh. That’s all I can say.

Several years ago when I took the Myers-Briggs test my results marked me as a ENFJ. I was marked as a Giver, as someone who gives more of myself than most other people do.

I took the test again today. I’m a ESFP or the Performer. I’m someone who likes being at the centre of attraction and don’t take too kindly to negative thoughts.

Hmm…

And now, a meme!

You are The Moon

Hope, expectation, Bright promises.

The Moon is a card of magic and mystery – when prominent you know that nothing is as it seems, particularly when it concerns relationships. All logic is thrown out the window.

The Moon is all about visions and illusions, madness, genius and poetry. This is a card that has to do with sleep, and so with both dreams and nightmares. It is a scary card in that it warns that there might be hidden enemies, tricks and falsehoods. But it should also be remembered that this is a card of great creativity, of powerful magic, primal feelings and intuition. You may be going through a time of emotional and mental trial; if you have any past mental problems, you must be vigilant in taking your medication but avoid drugs or alcohol, as abuse of either will cause them irreparable damage. This time however, can also result in great creativity, psychic powers, visions and insight. You can and should trust your intuition.

What Tarot Card are You?
Take the Test to Find Out.

Can’t believe it’s been more than 6 months since I started this meme. Whoops. Well, I might as well finish it, since it has been bugging my mind.

Have you ever written a character with physical or mental disabilities? Describe them, and if there’s nothing major to speak of, tell us a few smaller ones.
I once considered writing a character who had a learning disability, ala Fei Mau if anyone remembers the TVB drama about the big fat guy who was mentally disabled. Although the idea has been simmering in my mind, I eventually gave up because there was no way I could write/explore him without being condescending, rude and shallow.

How often do you think about writing? Ever come across something IRL that reminds you of your story/characters?
Strangely enough, now that I’m away, yes, I think about it all the time. Very often, it’s not really the act of writing, of exploring the world I’ve created that I miss the most. It’s just the feel of the keys and typing in general. I spend most of my days in front of a computer nowdays, perhaps more than I’ve ever done in years, but I don’t do a lot of typing. Instead, I click on the mouse. And when I do turn to write, it’s only for brief seconds. Sigh.

To answer the second question, yes, sometimes, but what those are, I’m not telling. :P

Final question! Tag someone! And tell us what you like about that person as a writer and/or about one of his/her characters!
Jhameia and Ai, if they’re reading their F-list. Tell me about the character you hate the most in your novel, and why. :P

2. For each question, press the next button to get your answer.
3. YOU MUST WRITE THAT SONG NAME DOWN NO MATTER HOW SILLY IT SOUNDS.

[LJ Meme!] Orange?

geminianeyes: Who Needs Sanity (Who Needs Sanity)
Reply to this entry with CITRUS somewhere in your comment. Then I'll choose six of your icons for you to talk about in your own journal.

So darling daughter May asked me to explain the following icons:

Smexy Naoya from SMT Devil Survivor
I loved Naoya's character once I saw him in SMT DS (which reminds me I actually need to finish that game... oops!) and when I saw this fanart of him with glasses, I immediately took him. He's typical of my fetish; bespectacled, all-knowing "bad boys" on the side of good. :D

Hagi Saya Side view looking out
I love this pairing to bits! I mean, it's Saya and Hagi, and I really think this icon sums up their entire relationship; always looking out, one for enemies and the other towards the road that stretches ahead of them. Not sure who coloured them, but when [profile] renjiluvah made this I knew I had to have it.

Miles Edgeworth walking away
When the trailer for Gyakuten Kenji 2 started making its rounds, there were rumours that Miles took off his jacket. And this icon is that. :D BRB dissolving into fangirl puddle.

10 minutes later...

What the hell did I just write icon
This was for Nanowrimo, but it sums up so much of my own writing. Very often, I go back to read my old stuff and wondered just what the heck I was on when I wrote it. I love this icon and it sums up 50% of my writing mood. XD

Who Needs Sanity
While this was what I got for Nanowrimo 2010 (mainly because I was writing a completely new story WHILE worldbuilding it) it describes my own approach to life. By sanity, I don't mean the psychological definition of insanity, but the day-to-day actions that other people would call crazy. It's always nice to do something unusual.

Cute sisters from PW as kids
I found this icon endearingly cute. Maya and Mia Fey from Phoenix Wright as kids. I love the innocent feel the picture has, especially since it strongly reminds me of the time that kids broke the vase (in one of the older cases). Maya looks up strongly to Mia, and Mia, well, she's protective of her sister. They're the almost perfect sisterly pair. :)

Short meme is short.

How willing are you to kill your characters if the plot so demands it? What’s the most interesting way you’ve killed someone?
Stabbing people straight in the heart. Always works. Though it really depends on the reason they die.

Do any of your characters have pets? Tell us about them.
If you count Spirit animals, then yes they do have pets. Though it tends to be servants rather than pets.

Let’s talk art! Do you draw your characters? Do others draw them? Pick one of your OCs and post your favorite picture of her!
Yes. Annwn’s turning out to be a rather multi-faceted character, which I think is quite a nice and pleasant surprise.

Along similar lines, do appearances play a big role in your stories? Tell us about them, or if not, how you go about designing your characters.

[Meme] Vocal Meme!

Saturday, December 11th, 2010 11:28 pm
geminianeyes: Cute sisters from PW as kids (Default)

Ganked from sis Wilddrive. :D I did this because I was bored.

Vocal Meme
Voice posts are fun, right? You get to hear funny accents if your friends are from far, far away. All we really want is to hear your voice, we don’t care what you’re saying. So here’s a list of typical meme questions that would otherwise be boring, but when communicated aloud – well, it’s entertaining. Answer these questions in your post, and encourage others with voice-posting abilities to do the same.

1) What’s your name?
2) How old are you?
3) Where are you from? Are you living there right now?
4) Is it cold where you are?
5) What’s the time?
6) What are you wearing?
7) What was the last thing you listened to?
8) What was the last thing you ate?
9) What was the last thing you watched on tv?
10) What’s your favorite tv show? Why?
11) Quick! Find a book, or something with text on it! Flip to a random page and read some of it! GO!
12) What was the last movie you saw? How was it?
13) Do YOU think you have an accent? Talk about that.

And here’s the vocal meme if you’re bored enough to listen! Warning, there will go the next 10 minutes of your life. :3

Nearly forgot to do this LOL. 4 more questions this time:

What are your favorite character interactions to write?
Arguments usually. Or anything that involves bratty stuff being done. I’m surprised at the amount of brattiness that takes place in the novel; not so much cajoling as sulking and threatening. Also, moe!Elliot is dangerous. Juufy, my characters are now planning to actually pull that stunt on me. T_T

Do any of your characters have children? How well do you write them?
Adopted, yes. Giving birth, only one, and that’s not even well-fleshed out. Geraldine is shaping up to be one of those pretentious kids who’s horribly spoiled. No redemption for her at this point, because when I wrote her, she was being controlled by a demon, so her behaviour was meant to allay suspicion that she was not her usual self. Otherwise, she tends to be rather intelligent and sweet. More like sweet. We’ll see if intelligent panders out later.

Tell us about one scene between your characters that you’ve never written or told anyone about before! Serious or not.
Asad and Chrodechild. In bed. Doing um… adult stuff. Which I could never write because I couldn’t even get the excuses of why they were in bed in the first place right! (and that’s very important to me, though need to note Chrodechild tops Asad).

How long does it usually take you to complete an entire story—from planning to writing to posting (if you post your work)?
Drabbles can take as little as 15 minutes. Shorts at least an hour or so (mainly for spell check purposes). For epic-level stuff like Nano? Try a few years. If that. :P

More tomorrow!

This is going to be a 2 in one meme. Which would explain why the URL ends with a double = 6060. XD The first one is from Neon.

1) How many of these (and what) do you enjoy? (Books, Anime, Manga/Comics, Games, others (elaboration is optional))
Books, anime, manga/comics, games, interactive novels and drama CDs (I only listen to Drama CDs if I know the story well, aka like Men’s Only Version: Little Women. This is because I need context;

2) What are your pings?

Genres – Usually fantasy, though for drama CDs it depends on how well Neon sells them to me. However, games that try to tell a story in an unusual way pings me, though games that are absolutely wrong like Monkey Island and classics like Baldur’s Gate also count. For anime, manga and books, it’s almost always how the authors tell the story and what their sources are. For fantasy novels, I go to books that have obvious sources like the Harry Potter series or explore things few other authors do like cartomancy and assassination… from the assassin’s point of view. XD

Tone – Funny books and the sense that the author doesn’t take themselves too seriously.

Seiyuu – I is not seiyuu fan. :3 Akira Ishida being the *only* exception for now. XD

OTHER PINGS – strong female characters. Women who are strong not physically, but in self-confidence. And preferably on the good side, rather than always being on the bad side. Women who can inspire, who lead because it’s a choice they make themselves, not because the lead guy died/disappeared/is a complete wimp. Cute megane types who are on the side of both the bad and good side. Guys who are very straight forward and honest (Seriously, why is SHIZUO pinging me in DRRR instead of Izaya?). Also, destroying fairy tales/common misconceptions (Kaori Yuki I love you).

3) Give me a sense of what you like? A few of your favourites please.

Currently: Mmm… DRRR! (Neon I need to leech Baccano from you), Pandora Hearts (manga), the Gates saga by Kate Elliot, and I just finished Test of the Twins (Raistlin <3333333).

Writing meme! Stuff covered here:
16. Do you write romantic relationships? How do you do with those, and how “far” are you willing to go in your writing? ;)
17. Favorite protagonist and why!
18. Favorite antagonist and why!
19. Favorite minor that decided to shove himself into the spotlight and why!

Answers under the cut!

What’s your favorite culture to write, fictional or not?
I… don’t really think I have one. I like components of a culture, like how they cast spells, what they believe in and the like, but I don’t think per se I do have any particular culture in mind when I write. How I approach culture in this sense is pretty much how I approach culture in real life; it’s a component, and I only examine it if it affects how I write.

How do you map out locations, if needed? Do you have any to show us?
Do timelines count? Because I have a really, really bad sense of direction and distance, and well… I’ve tried mapping once, many, many years ago. To say that it didn’t work out… :3

Midway question! Tell us about a writer you admire, whether professional or not!
Dimmie actually. There’s a lot of thought and life that goes into her characters, and you get the sense that there’s a certain irrelevancy in the way she writes. Not that what she writes is irrelevant, but that it’s irrelevant what happens to her characters because you know they’ll be brought back for more. In other words, she abuses her characters the way I wish I could.

In what story did you feel you did the best job of worldbuilding? Any side-notes on it you’d like to share?
Considering the world where my stories take place, there’s only one world where I really did spend time building up the entire world, which would be Jiat. There was that unnamed world where I tried writing the story as though it was a game project, but that kinda failed after a little while.

The main thing I learnt was to look at your world as a platform to tell a story. It’s a stage you can set elements in, but once they’re there, they’re set. Don’t change them.

Or something like that.

Two questions instead of one cause the other’s a giveaway:

What are some really weird situations your characters have been in? Everything from serious canon scenes to meme questions counts!
This is my only answer.

Who is your favorite character to write? Least favorite?
Fandom characters are the hardest to write because you have to ensure that they stay IN character. Yet they are some of my faves to write because when you get under their skin, they do it so well!

Right now, my least favourite isn’t a particular character per se, but the idea of RP itself. This is mainly because I can’t quite seem to get into the heads of my characters as I did once before, so for me, it’s not so much the characters that I don’t like writing, it’s more of the genre I chose to write into.

And easier than I thought. 6865 words written, and I’m already feeling like I want to burn this manuscript. Missing details, an intro by Yura, random characters popping in and out, and I haven’t been able to work in my main villains yet! Argh! Oh wait, there was one villain whom I managed to slip in. Which would be interesting to see if she really pans out. Though her name’s easily obvious once you realise I’m an Ubuntu fangirl. >>

Onto meme!

How do you get ideas for your characters? Describe the process of creating them.
For how I get ideas, please see here.

As for creating them… they come into being as and when I need them. I don’t usually create characters beforehand unless I’ve done some outlining and plot thinking beforehand (which is usually Nano) but most times they appear as the scene demands. Like their names, most are throwaways, but if any of them impress me, then I might keep them, which is how Deb and Rasenkal came to stay.

Now, onto dinner!

Nanowrimo has started! And like the mad woman I am, I’ve written around 3718 words. Am aiming to get at least 9k by Thursday as I know I won’t have time to write over the weekend. Will most likely be on a road trip then and so yours truly will be Internetless AND most likely lappie-less. Family takes precedence for this particular trip.

And now, on with the meme!
What’s your favorite genre to write? To read?
As most people know, I love writing fantasy and it’s various children. I’ve dabbled a bit in science fiction universes, and a bit in erotica, but I’ve always liked writing in fantasy because I like the idea of using magic, and the various shortcuts it allows you. I’ve yet to make the price of magic fit the effort needed to make it work, but that should be remedied in this Nanowrimo.

As for to read, it really depends on my mood. Sometimes it may be realistic fiction, other times fantasy… really depends on what I feel like dipping my feet into at that particular moment in time.

Two memes cause it’s almost Nano and I’m writing this one quickly. :P

Where are you most comfortable writing? At what time of day? Computer or good ol’ pen and paper?
Simply put: I’m most comfy writing anywhere I can sit up. Can’t write on the bed and can’t write lying down, but sitting up with my legs on the chair or on the floor will do just fine. And of course, while pen and paper are nice, I find writing’s best in a dark room with just me and my text on the computer.

Do you listen to music while you write? What kind? Are there any songs you like to relate/apply to your characters?
Hah! My characters don’t get music. They rarely get a theme song, cause I find that reducing their existence to a single song to be quite… insulting? So what they get is scene music. Which is why you’ll find my Nanowrimo playlist full of anime OSTs and random full-length album music. I generally go by the the tone and mood set by the song rather than then actual meaning of the song; it’s quite likely that I’ll be writing something cheerfully depressive with Angela Aki’s Mad Scientist for this year’s Nano while doing the rebellious them plot points with Complication from Durarara!

Which reminds me I need to put the Men’s Only Drama CD for Little Women on Ysabell so I have something to listen to while driving to work.

[Meme] First steps

Thursday, October 28th, 2010 08:21 pm
geminianeyes: Cute sisters from PW as kids (Default)

Tell us about one of your first stories/characters!

I hated the thought of writing when I was a kid. Actually up to the age of 10, I pretty much hated reading and anything to do with books. This was until I started reading Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys. From then on, my school’s library was my refuge. A few years later, someone introduced me to those Malay romance novels written by Ahadiat and I was hooked onto reading. During my school holidays I would read my cousin sister’s books like Black Beauty.

I started writing when I was 12 because my mom made me write out select passages to improve my handwriting. After a few days of copying out random passages, I started writing a story about an adventurer named Irene, who was a big sister to me. Irene was rich, confident, and athletic, everything I thought a girl living on her own should be. She was 26, rode a horse… and that’s all I remember.

I don’t remember the plot nor do I remember much else. Oh yes, there is one more embarrassing detail.

I was into self-insertion even then. >>
